Gingerbread Trail to Add Festive Flavour to Cardiff Bay this December

The countdown is on until Cardiff Bay is transformed into a jolly gingerbread jamboree with sculptures of the festive treat appearing at everyone’s favourite hotspots across the Bay this December and January.

In exactly one month, on 1 December, a brand new gingerbread trail will launch, perfect for visitors looking for fun, budget friendly ways of getting into the Christmas spirit.

For the first time this year, organisations across Cardiff Bay, led by Waterfront Partners Cardiff Bay, are joining forces to host the trail, which will see a family of gingerbread characters pop up around the iconic waterside location.

In total there will be nine ‘sweet’ gingerbread statues spread around the Bay with a gingerbread sleigh taking centre stage in Roald Dahl Plass. There is also a Gingerbread Day in the Bay planned for 3 December where visitors are invited to take part in a number of fun, family activities.

As well as being able to take photos with the characters, visitors are being challenged to take part in a free prize draw simply by spotting the letters hidden on each of the characters and unscrambling them to find a festive word. The puzzle can be completed in English or Welsh, either in one of the booklets available at participating venues or online at visitcardiffbay.info.

The family prize will include an overnight stay with breakfast at Future Inns, Everyman cinema tickets, family bowling at Hollywood Bowl, and a meal at Hub Box.

The trail will run from 1 December to 8 January, with the prize draw taking place once the trail closes. There will also be random spot prizes for people who submit their selfies via social media. The prizes, which are being provided by a range of partners, include Odeon cinema tickets, a boat tour with Princess Katharine, a meal at Volcano in the Red Dragon Centre and more.

The Gingerbread Trail is being supported by The Red Dragon Centre, Cardiff Harbour Authority, Craft in the Bay, The Senedd, Mermaid Quay, Giovanni’s in the Bay, Voco St David’s Hotel and the Coal Exchange Hotel Cardiff.

Emma Constantinou, marketing manager at the Red Dragon Centre, said: “After a few very low-key Christmases, we’re thrilled to be joining forces for such a joyous festive offering in Cardiff Bay. We know that things are tough for a lot of families at the moment so we wanted to create something that was fun and free that anyone could enjoy.”

Cllr Jennifer Burke-Davies, Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events said: “The team at Cardiff Harbour Authority jumped at the opportunity to be part of the Gingerbread Trail, it encompasses so much of Cardiff Bay and will give visitors the chance to see the best the area has to offer. Christmas in Cardiff is shaping up to be pretty special, and we hope the trail will help provide some festive magic for families over the festive period.”
