The organisers of the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival – celebrating global stories and Cardiff charm are immensely proud and excited to announce that for the sixth time the BAFTA and BIFA qualifying festival for British short film has been recognised by MovieMaker Magazine as one of the ’50 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee in 2026’.
This prestigious accolade was announced on 26 May by MovieMaker Magazine, a leading US publication focused on the art and business of independent filmmaking, read primarily by filmmakers, festival programmers, film educators and industry professionals. It has a highly-targeted readership with both print and digital distribution concentrated in North America and Europe.
MovieMaker Magazine’s annual ’50 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee’ list is widely regarded as a filmmaker‑trust signal, highlighting festivals that offer genuine value rather than prestige alone. Festivals are selected through data, filmmaker feedback and editorial research, prioritising audience engagement, meaningful networking, industry access, quality presentation, and fair submission odds.
Berwyn Rowlands, Iris Prize Festival Director said: “The response from filmmakers has always been flattering and kind with many, especially those who attend the festival in Cardiff, commenting that they feel looked after by Iris, like being a member of an extended family. So, I guess we had a hunch that we were getting some things right. This recognition from MovieMaker, a much-respected magazine, confirms we are a good friend to filmmakers, and we will never take them for granted.”
Tim Molloy, Editor-in-Chief of MovieMaker Magazine said: “Congratulations to the Iris Prize on 20 years of supporting LGBTQ+ filmmakers and giving audiences thousands of films to celebrate. Its legacy is making people feel stronger, less alone, and more open to empathy and courage. It amplifies art, yes, but also helps artists make the business connections that can expand their vision as far as possible.”
