Event Info

Welsh trumpeter Tomos Williams, returns to Llais with the third and final iteration of his extraordinary ‘Cwmwl Tystion’ project, which explores events in Welsh history through music.

Following Cwmwl Tystion II / Riot!’s performance at Llais in 2023, Tomos has once again assembled an incredible band of Welsh and international talent for Cwmwl Tystion III / Empathy.

Nia Lynn and Eadyth Crawford are two of Wales’ most creative  and versatile Welsh language vocalists.

Melvin Gibbs, from Brooklyn, New York is an internationally recognised giant on the electric bass, and has been called ‘The greatest bassist in the world’ by Time Out New York, whose worked with everyone from Ornette Coleman to Henry Rollins, while Irish guitarist Chris Guilfoyle has established himself as one of the hottest musicians coming out of the Emerald isle.

Finally Mark O’Connor is in the drum seat alongside live visuals from Simon Proffitt, both longtime collaborators in the ‘Cwmwl Tystion’ project.

Cwmwl Tystion III / Empathy toured Wales in 2024, and this will be a final, exclusive, one off performance by the band at Llais – to round off the project in style, and also to celebrate the release of the album Cwmwl Tystion III / Empathy earlier this year.

The name ‘Cwmwl Tystion’ (cloud of witnesses) is derived from a poem by the great Welsh poet Waldo Williams and the music incorporating elements of jazz, heavy rock, and Welsh folk music augmented by live visuals will reference and commemorate events in Welsh history such as the Welsh Not, the Aberfan disaster, the Miners’ Strike and Paul Robesons’ long association with Wales.
