National Stadium of Wales to Host 2029 UEFA Women's Champions League Final

Cardiff Council and the Welsh Rugby Union have welcomed today’s news that Cardiff has been selected as the host city for the 2029 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final.

UEFA confirmed the appointment of Cardiff and Principality Stadium at its meeting today, recognising Wales’ capital city and the National Stadium of Wales as the venue for one of the most prestigious fixtures in world football as part of a joint BID from Welsh Government, Cardiff Council and the Welsh Rugby Union (National Stadium of Wales).

The selection marks another major milestone in the city’s reputation as a world-class host of international sporting events and will see Europe’s elite women’s club football competition reach its climax in the heart of Cardiff.

Wales has a proud track record of hosting major sporting and entertainment occasions, which includes 84 football matches over 25 years.  Recent highlights include the UEFA Champions League Final in 2017 and the FA Community Shield held earlier this year; in addition, the stadium has played host to WBO World heavy-weight boxing titles, the Rugby World Cup, international rugby, the first major WWE event in the UK in 30 years ‘Clash at the Castle’, as well as attracting the world’s biggest musicians from Oasis to Taylor Swift and the Rolling Stones.

Welcoming today’s announcement, the Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Chris Weaver said: “This is fantastic news for Cardiff and another proud moment for our capital city. Being chosen to host the 2029 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final reflects Cardiff’s reputation as one of Europe’s leading destinations for major sporting events.

“The 2029 final will bring a global audience to Cardiff, and we know from previous major events that the benefits extend far beyond the stadium, they support local businesses, attract visitors and create opportunities across the city and wider region. Just as importantly, hosting this final will help celebrate the continued growth of the women’s game, inspire young people, and leave a legacy for future generations.”

Cllr Jennifer Burke, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, said: “This is wonderful news for Cardiff and a fantastic opportunity to showcase our capital city.

“The UEFA Women’s Champions League Final is a huge game, and being chosen to host it is testament to Cardiff’s reputation for delivering world-class sporting events.

“We saw the benefits that came from hosting the UEFA Men’s Champions League Final in 2017. It brought visitors from across Europe, boosted the local economy and put Cardiff in front of a global audience. We’re looking forward to building on that success in 2029.

“The women’s game is growing at an incredible pace, both internationally and here in Cardiff, with more players, fans and opportunities than ever before. Hosting this final will help celebrate that progress, inspire the next generation and bring another unforgettable sporting occasion to our city.”

The 2029 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final further strengthens Wales’ position on the global sporting stage while highlighting the continued growth and success of women’ssport.

WRU Chief Financial and Operating Officer Gavin Marshall said, “This is an incredible moment for our stadium and our city.

“We have a rich footballing heritage, from hosting domestic cup finals and international fixtures to welcoming the UEFA Champions League Final in 2017 and delivering the FA’s Community Shield in August.  The EUROS 2028 further demonstrates our capability to host major football events on the biggest stage, and, the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final represents another fantastic opportunity to build on that legacy while showcasing Cardiff and Wales to a global audience.

For the purposes of the event, Principality Stadium will be known as the National Stadium of Wales.
