2. NATURE TRAILS AT BUTE PARK

Bute Park, Cardiff’s sprawling green sanctuary, is perfect for summer walks and nature-based play. 3. PLENTY OF GAMES AT ROXY LANES

Roxy Lanes in Cardiff offers far more than your average bowling alley. Visitors can enjoy American pool, shuffleboard, batting cages, beer pong, duckpin bowling, and more. Pedal around the expansive city parks or join the Taff Trail if you fancy venturing a little further. 9. ACTION-PACKED DAYS OUT AT THE HUNDRED

Families looking for a fun-filled summer day out can head to Sophia Gardens as Welsh Fire brings an exciting festival atmosphere to Cardiff alongside world-class cricket. Throughout the summer, visitors can enjoy live performances from former Wales rugby star Josh Navidi, rising Welsh singer-songwriter Hana Lili, legendary Newport rock band Feeder and award-winning Welsh-language trio Mellt, creating a packed programme of entertainment on and off the field.

There is plenty to keep all ages entertained, with daredevil BMX stunt shows, spectacular fire performers, interactive sports activities and a variety of street food stalls serving flavours from across Wales. 10. FAMILY FUN PARK CARDIFF BAY

Cardiff Bay Family Fun Park is back for the summer holidays, bringing excitement and family entertainment to Roald Dahl Plass in the heart of Cardiff Bay. New for 2026 is Skyfall, the UK’s largest travelling free-fall drop tower, offering breathtaking views across the city before an adrenaline-fuelled vertical drop, alongside favourite funfair rides including Dodgems, the Funhouse, Runaway Train and Water Walkers.

11. BRICK DRAIG AT THE RED DRAGON CENTRE

Families can enjoy a free summer adventure at The Red Dragon Centre with Brick Draig, an interactive dragon trail running until 31 August. Visitors can meet 12 incredible brick-built dragon hatchlings making their UK public debut and help solve the mystery of their missing eggs by following clues hidden throughout the centre.

The fun begins at the Dragons’ Den, where families can start their quest before exploring the centre to match each dragon to its elemental realm of Fire, Earth, Water or Air. After completing the trail, children can make an eco pledge and discover which dragon realm they belong to, before enjoying The Red Dragon Centre’s range of restaurants, entertainment and attractions all under one roof. 12. WORKSHOPS AND SHOWS AT TECHNIQUEST

This summer, Techniquest is packed with extra family activities alongside its interactive exhibits. Children aged 5+ can get hands-on in a fun slime-making workshop, creating and customising their own colourful pot of slime to take home (£5 per kit), while the action-packed Battle of the Bangs live science show puts some of Techniquest’s biggest explosions, fireballs and crowd-favourite experiments head-to-head in a fiery science tournament.

Younger explorers can also enjoy Little Bear’s Big Adventure, a charming planetarium experience for under-7s that combines a magical story with a presenter-led tour of the night sky (£2 per person in addition to admission). 13. TAKE A BOAT TOUR

Enjoy Cardiff from a different perspective aboard Princess Katharine with Cardiff Boat Tours. The scenic hour-long cruises link Cardiff Bay and Bute Park, offering both a peaceful ride and a convenient way to travel between key attractions. Operating daily between 10am and 4pm, the service departs on the hour and requires no pre-booking—though you can reserve online if preferred. 14. SCENIC WALKS AT CARDIFF BAY BARRAGE

The Cardiff Bay Barrage is ideal for a family walk, bike ride, or picnic with sweeping views over the Bay and Severn Estuary. Its flat, step-free pathway makes it accessible for prams, bikes, and wheelchairs, while playful landmarks like the “Croc in the Dock” sculpture add to the fun.

15. SIX WEEKS OF SUMMER EVENTS AT MERMAID QUAY

This summer, Mermaid Quay is bringing six weeks of free family fun to Cardiff Bay, with interactive nature-themed activities taking over Tacoma Square every Thursday from 23 July to 27 August. From building bug hotels and making flower crowns to discovering the magic of butterflies and bees, there’s a new adventure every week to keep children entertained, learning and exploring throughout the school holidays.

After the activities, families can make a day of it by enjoying Mermaid Quay’s waterfront restaurants, cafés, shops and attractions, with the added convenience of a brand-new 679-space multi-storey car park. 18. ST FAGANS NATIONAL MUSEUM OF HISTORY

Step back in time at St Fagans, one of the world’s best open-air museums, where over 50 historic Welsh buildings have been carefully reconstructed across 100 acres of parkland. 20. SUMMER FAMILY FUN AT THE ROYAL MINT EXPERIENCE

Families can enjoy a summer of discovery at The Royal Mint Experience, with special savings available on visits between 25 June and 1 September 2026, plus free holiday activities including courtyard games and colouring sheets in the café. Visitors can also explore the fascinating history of coinmaking on a guided tour and even strike their own coin to take home as a unique souvenir.

From 3 August to 13 September, the venue will host the free exhibition 50 Years of Aardman: Models, Makers and Magic, featuring original sets, artwork, family activities and a scavenger hunt celebrating the animation studio’s most-loved characters. Young creatives can also get hands-on during special Aardman Model Making Workshops on 8 and 12 August, where they’ll learn from an expert model maker and create their own clay Aardman character to take home.Discover more here.

BUSES

This summer, getting out and about with the family is more affordable than ever.  From Sunday 19 July until Monday 31 August, Cardiff Bus‘ Summer Saver Family Ticket is being discounted to just £6 when you buy it on the Cardiff Bus app. This gives unlimited day travel for you and your family across all the services (except skycar).

 

TRAINS

Get free rail travel for children with TfW. Those aged 11-16 can travel free at off-peak times and under 11s travel for free on all services at all times with a paying adult.
