VOICES OF THE RED WALL

FREE / St Fagans National Museum of History / Ends 17 April 

Supporters of our national football teams are called The Red Wall. Dressed in their bucket hats and replica shirts, belting out chants from the stands, they’re often described as the twelfth player on the pitch.

To celebrate Cymru qualifying for the FIFA World Cup, this exhibition shines a spotlight on some of the people and communities of The Red Wall. Fashion, music, identities and politics are all here, cemented together by a sense of belonging. This is their story – your story – the bricks of The Red Wall. It’s a fan-led experience like no other.

MONTGOMERY BONBON: MUSEUM MYSTERY TRAIL

FREE / Museum of Cardiff / 18 – 26 February

Go undercover and test your detective skills at Museum of Cardiff as part of the national Montgomery Bonbon: Museum Mystery Trail, organised by Kids in Museums and Walker Books. The trail celebrates the release of new children’s book Montgomery Bonbon: Murder at the Museum written by comedian Alasdair Beckett-King and illustrated by Claire Powell. Grab an activity sheet, solve puzzles and have fun with your family this half term.

SPACE CLUB

FREE / Mermaid Quay

Take a journey around the Solar System this February Half Term at Mermaid Quay! This half term visitors will be able to participate in a trail where participants have the chance to win a £50 voucher for Hub Box Cardiff Bay.

There will also be a colouring in competition running where two £10 Cadwaladers gift cards are up for grabs. Alongside this there are three days of activity to look forward to!

JUMP RIGHT IN

On top of all that, there are 100+ interactive exhibits, mind-boggling machines and perplexing puzzles spread across two floors to keep curious minds busy at Cardiff Bay’s iconic Science Discovery Centre.

GOING BATTY IN BUTE PARK

Bute Park / 21 February / As part of Cardiff Science Festival

What do we know about bats? What do they eat? How do they move? Where do they live? Enjoy some Batty art and craft activities.

Sessions at 10am, 12noon and 2pm (60 minutes). Children must be accompanied by an adult. Suitable for children aged 5 years+.

DINOSAUR DASH

Listen up dinosaur explorers! It seems our sharp toothed friends have visited Bute Park overnight and left behind some prehistoric eggs. The problem is, these eggs are close to hatching and are a little wriggly to say the least. It seems they’ve wriggled and rolled out of their nests and could be anywhere in the park grounds!

Can you help our dinosaur explorers to track down the eggs and return them to safety before they hatch across Cardiff? You’ll need to know your T-Rex from your Triceratops, in this ROARSOME storytelling adventure.

Play Opera LIVE

In a roarsome show that is both entertaining and educational, sing, dance and clap along to some of our favourite pieces of music from stage and screen, including John Williams’s epic Jurassic Park Theme.

Get up close and personal with dinosaurs from Tony Mitton’s popular children’s book, BumpusJumpus Dinosaurumpus, featuring vivid video projections and original narration by our wonderful presenter Tom Redmond.

RAILWAY GARDENS SESSIONS

If you haven’t been already local social enterprise Green Squirrel run a ton of events, workshops and sessions at their Railway Gardens in Splott.

The major events for half term include a Family Natural Fabric Dyeing Session on Tuesday 21st February and The Games Museum, on Wednesday 22nd February, where you can find out and play games from times past.

GETTING AROUND

Cardiff Boat Tours

EXPLOR CARDIFF BY BOAT

Cardiff Boat Tours ‘Princess Katharine’ is a heated 90 seat water taxi. Board at either Cardiff Bay or Bute Park (close to Cardiff Castle) and take the half hour one way trip. Then after some time ashore, get back on for the return journey. Alternatively, enjoy an hour-long tour from either boarding point. There’s fascinating commentary telling the history of the area and the sights along the way.

There is a toilet on board for passenger comfort. A great way to see the city from a different perspective.

TRAVEL BY GWR

HOP ON THE BUS

There are plenty of things to do in and around Cardiff this half term and there’s no better way of getting to them than with Cardiff Bus!

By purchasing one of their family day tickets, you and your family can travel quickly and cost-effectively across Cardiff Bus’ comprehensive network.  Families of up to 5 can travel around Cardiff and Penarth all day for £5.50, or across their entire network for £8. Terms and conditions apply.

Kids go free on Transport for Wales trains when accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

Important things to note before you travel;

  • Free child travel is only available in Standard class
  • Up to two children can travel for free, per paying adult. Adults must obtain a ticket for all children travelling. Free child travel tickets are only available from a ticket office or on-board from a conductor
  • Under 5’s travel for free on all National Rail services
  • Children aged 5-16 travel for free on Transport for Wales trains only
