This summer Cardiff will host the biggest para badminton event ever hosted in Wales, as the country aims to become a hub for elite para sport. From 22-26 July the world’s best para badminton athletes will descend on Sport Wales National Centre for the British & Irish Para Badminton International 2025.
With one week to go until the event, Badminton Wales has unveiled their ‘Can You Manage’ campaign. A hard-hitting video featuring para badminton athletes with the aim of raising awareness of their capabilities and promoting participation of para-badminton across the UK.
The British & Irish Para Badminton International 2025 is one of the most important events on the para badminton circuit, carrying significant ranking points and playing a pivotal role in the journey to the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games. The event is supported by UK Sport, the Welsh Government, Sport Wales, Yonex, and Disability Sport Wales, in partnership with Badminton Ireland, Badminton Scotland, and Badminton England
Over 300 athletes, officials, and volunteers from more than 40 nations will descend on Cardiff, bringing together Paralympic champions, world title holders, and rising stars across all six para badminton sport classes. Spectators can expect five days of intense competition and inspiring performances, with players competing in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events.
Speaking ahead of the event, Badminton Wales CEO Kelly Aston MBE shared her excitement, “We’re incredibly proud to be bringing the British & Irish Para Badminton International to Cardiff. This event is about more than world-class sport. It’s about challenging perceptions, creating opportunities, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. That’s exactly what our ‘Can You Manage?’ campaign sets out to do – spark conversations around inclusion and representation in sports. Hosting this tournament is a powerful extension of that message.”
Commenting on the tournament’s significance for Wales, Minister for Sport Jack Sargeant said, “It’s great to welcome truly impressive international badminton competitors to Wales for such an exciting event. This tournament provides a fantastic opportunity to see Welsh athletes compete at an elite level on home turf. “Events like this are central to our ambitions to establish Wales as a top destination for para sport, inspiring the next generation of athletes and showcasing the incredible talent within our para sport community. Pob lwc to all the competitors and organisers, and croeso i Gymru!”
