What else can I do in the city?

With a variety of attractions in walking distance, or just a short ride away, visitors will be spoilt for choice! Check out the list below…

1) Cardiff Castle

Uniquely located across the road from the Principality Stadium, the 2000-year-old Castle is a must-see attraction. Explore some of the UK’s finest Victorian interiors in the House, climb The Norman Keep for a great view of the city, and walk through the eery wartime shelters. The Visitor Centre (Café Bar and Gift Shop) is free to enter, but to explore the Castle and grounds visitors need to purchase a General Admission ticket.

Top Tip! The outside café terrace has one of the best views in the city. Why not stop by and grab a drink or a bite to eat?

 

2) National Museum Cardiff

Located just a short stroll away from the Castle, the building forms part of the Civic Centre, and it’s a popular with visitors of all ages.

The galleries house an exceptional collection of paintings by artists such as Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh. Alongside an array of natural history and geology exhibits including the Welsh dinosaur Dracoraptor hanigigani! Plus, visitors can find out more about Welsh culture in their regular programme of events.

Top Tip! It’s free to enter, but it’s worth checking their website to see what exhibitions are on as they may need a ticket for entry.

 

3) Visit Cardiff Bay

Cardiff Bay is only a mile from the city centre and is easy to get to on the number 6 bus service or by a train. Popular for its scenic waterfront views, it’s the perfect place to try one of the boat trips on offer at the inner harbour – or stay on dry land take a stroll around the water’s edge to the Barrage.

Also take some time to check out the events at the iconic Wales Millenium Centre, exhibitions in the historic Pierhead building, activities at Techniquest science centre, or try bowling and visit a casino at the Red Dragon Centre.

Top Tip! Travel back to the city centre on the water taxi. Hop onboard at the inner harbour and finish the journey at Bute Park next to Cardiff Castle. Buy tickets on the boat.

 

4) Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay

Looking for a please to relax with a beer or enjoy a nice meal with a view of the water? Mermaid Quay is the area on the waterfront that boasts a variety of bars and restaurants.

Head to the independent bar The Dock, popular for its food and drink offers, live music and outside terrace. Feeling hungry? The botanical themed restaurant the Botanist, has made a name for itself with its Hanging Kababs – and also boasts live music session and a balcony. Other firm favourites include Las Iguanas, Cote, Pizza Express and Cosy Club.

Top Tip! Pop into the Fabulous Welshcakes shop to buy a bag of warm Welsh cakes straight off the griddle. Choose from a variety of flavours from traditional raisins to choc chip.
