All You Need to Know about Cycling in Cardiff

Did you know that the Tour of Britain hits Cardiff this Sunday? So, if you are inspired to dig out your old bike, or maybe try cycling as a new hobby, then here’s 7 reasons why you should visit Cardiff…

1. Try something new with Pedal Power

Pedal Power, based in the caravan park in Pontcanna, and on the waterfront in Cardiff Bay, is a charity that encourages all ages and abilities to experience the benefits of cycling. The team have a wide range of standard and adaptive bikes and trikes to explore the city with; even supplying E-bikes if you want to take things a little easier.

If you are feeling a little nervous about cycling and want to look at ways to gain confidence on a bike, book one of Pedal Power’s cycle skills training sessions.

2. Explore more with Ding Tours

Cycle the Welsh Capital with Ding Tours, a tour company who take you on a journey of the city with a difference, and with their signature blue bikes with traditional bells you won’t be able to miss them.

Explore the sights with a biking group and learn more about the history behind Cardiff’s fascinating landmarks. If you worried about the pace or fitness, frequent stops are taken throughout, or if you fancy something a little different you can book a bespoke tour to have a day out with family or friends.

3. From sea to sky on the Taff Trail

The Taff Trail is a 55-mile cycle route positioned between Cardiff and Brecon, starting in the picturesque waterfront of Cardiff Bay. The route then follows the river through the vibrant city centre before making your way to the historical Castle Coch and the mountains beyond.

Throughout the route you will experience abandoned railways lines, mountain backdrops, wondering wildlife and plenty of picnic stops throughout. The paths are well maintained with places to stop on route if needed.

4. Discover more on the Cardiff Bay Trail

This circular route around the Bay  spans over 10 km with views over the Seven estuary… it’s definitely not to be missed!

Find out more about Cardiff’s rich history and landmarks on route with the Bay trail map. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many attractions including the Children’s play area, adiZone outdoor gym and the barrage, or grab a seat and re-fuel at one of the selection of cafes, bars and restaurants ready to you.

5. Check out the Wales Coastal Path

Covering over 15.60km between Cardiff and Newport, the Wales Coastal Path has picturesque views across the Severn Estuary and plenty of opportunities to par-take in bird watching due to the mudflats and saltmarsh that attracts the wading birds.

You will also get the chance to experience iconic architecture including the Cardiff Bay Barrage, Newport Transport Bridge and Wales Millennium Centre. You may even be able to spot Flat Holm and Weston-Super-Mare in the distance when cycling over the barrage.

6. Where to store your bike

Secure cycle lockers are situated around the city, all you have to do is download the SpokeSafe App, create an account and select Cardiff as your location and find a space.  Daily prices start from £1.50 with weekly prices costing £7.50 and Monthly locker prices at £20. More information here.

Alternatively the Bike Lock is a cycle storage facility in Cardiff city centre that also has a café with speciality coffee, and meeting and event space.

The venue has secure storage for up to 50 bikes, E-bike charging points, and if you are needing a shower before heading out to your destination, don’t worry, shower and changing facilities are available. Day storage starts from £3.

7. Gain confidence with Cycle Training Courses

Do you live or work in Cardiff? With the city’s growing cycleways, and more employers offering cycle to work schemes, it could be time to get on your bike to travel round the city.

However, for those who don’t feel confident with cycling around a busy city, don’t  worry, free Adult Cycle Training is available through the council’s  website with lessons ranging from beginners to experienced riders.
